Home Sweet Home

For those that don’t know the story of my move to New York…

My new job in New York was beginning mid-July, but due to family emergencies and a trip to Europe, I was unable to come to New York prior to my start date to look for apartments. I flew up to start my job with the intention of staying with friends for a week or two while I found an apartment with my roommates-to-be. Well, a week or two turned into 10, but thats a whole different story.

Anyway, around early August, Scott was moving into his place down on Wall Street. Because his roommate was not moving in until the end of the month, he offered me a place to stay at his apartment. Seeing as I was still homeless, and was sleeping on another friend’s small couch at the time, I gladly accepted.

The building Scott was moving into was a brand-new ‘luxury’ high rise apartment building downtown. He was among the first waves of residents to actually move in, but since the building was so new, a lot of the kinks had not yet been worked out. Long story short, the following article from the New York Times sums up the first month at “The Crest”…(note: there’s a side story about a couple that also lives there).

Remember, Scott moved in early August, but then went back home for a few weeks, leaving me to stay there by myself. Their apartment was not yet fully furnished – not even a chair for me to sit on.

So there I was, no internet/phone/cable, no gas, hit-or-miss hot water, shitty elevators, no laundry room, no gym, no great room. And the moths, by god, the moths (on the lobby wallpaper). On top of that, I was sleeping on an air mattress. I was living quite an existential life…
