You know how sometimes you’ll accidentally make eye contact with someone in public? I don’t mean the intentional eye contact when you’re checking someone out in a bar/subway/workplace. I mean the eye contact that occurs when two completely random people happen to shift their eyes into exactly opposite directions at an exact moment in time.
It comes out of nowhere. You aren’t expecting it to happen. You’re not prepared for it. It just jumps out at you like a squirrel crossing the road. All it took was a slight turn of the head and you’ve found yourself eye-to-eye (literally) in a social train wreck. Partly because you’re embarrassed, and partly because your brain hasn’t yet figured out what’s going on, you instantly shift your gaze away hoping to avoid longer eye contact, hoping that the other person didn’t notice, hoping more that they didn’t notice you look away.
That happened to me today in a department store.
With a mirror.
