When My Time Comes – Dawes – Dawes
Classmate Noah, blogging here as Chimy Chim, introduced me to this band when he included this song on a mix CD he made earlier this year. I’ve since fallen in love with the whole album, but this song still remains my favorite. It’s just got such a good rhythm to it; I can’t think of another song I’ve heard in any recent amount of time that uses triplets at all, let alone awesomely. The band/album have a great “Americana” sound (which Noah says is influenced by The Band), and a mixture of faster and slower songs that are perfect for my frequent long drives down here in Texas.
This song has become my favorite for a couple of reasons:
1. I saw Dawes live when they opened for Deer Tick down here in Texas earlier this summer. I hadn’t heard of Deer Tick much, but the lead singer of that group came on stage for When My Time Comes, sang part of the lyrics and chorus and played the harmonica along with the music. It was awesome, and made me appreciate him and his band that much more. It’s awesome when a song can do that.
2. I recently got an iPhone, and even more recently have been experimenting with its ability to play custom ringtones/sounds. I created a 30-second clip from the song for a ringtone but soon realized a better use for the soundbite. I’m positive the lyrics have a deeper meaning, but hearing the chorus belted out in a 30-second loop at 6:30am when my alarm goes off seems pretty apropos!
